Regular Season Round 5: Mainz - Heidelberg 58-63

The biggest surprise of round 5 in 2.Bundesliga was guest BasCats Heidelberg's (3-2) road victory over ASC Theresianum Mainz (#6) 63-58 on Sunday evening. ASC Theresianum Mainz was trailing by 3 points at halftime but managed to get 9-point lead after three quarters before a 25-11 charge of BasCats Heidelberg, which allowed them to win the game. They also forced 21 ASC Theresianum Mainz turnovers and outrebounded them 45-30 including a 20-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. 24 personal fouls committed by ASC Theresianum Mainz helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was American center Erica Carlson (193-88, college: Dixie St.) who had a double-double by scoring 14 points and 16 rebounds. Her fellow American import point guard Serena Benavente (167-85, college: St.Mary's, CA) chipped in 12 points, 7 assists and 7 steals. Forward Lilian Koch (180-90) produced 21 points and 4 steals and forward Sunniva Ferri (181-97) added 15 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. BasCats Heidelberg moved-up to third place in South, which they share with 3 other teams. ASC Theresianum Mainz at the other side dropped to the seventh position with three games lost. They share it with Rhein MB II and Wuerzburg. BasCats Heidelberg is looking forward to face Fellbach (#12) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. ASC Theresianum Mainz will play against Rhein MB II (#8) in Langen and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
