Regular Season Round 9: Khimik-2 - Avangard 66-81

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of undefeated Khimik-2 (5-1) in Yuzhny on Friday night. Hosts were defeated by sixth ranked Avangard (6-1) 81-66. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Khimik-2. It was a key game for the second position in the league. The game was mostly controlled by Avangard. Khimik-2 managed to win fourth quarter 16-12. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Avangard dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Khimik-2's 30 and made 18-of-22 free shots (81.8 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Khimik-2 48-26 including a 36-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. Avangard looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by Khimik-2's players. It was a good game for the former international forward Oleg Saltovets (202-77) who led his team to a victory with 23 points and 7 rebounds (perfect from the field making all nine shots !!!). Swingman Mikhailo Nasennik (200-83) contributed with 19 points for the winners. point guard Illya Sydorov (183-96) answered with 16 points and 4 assists and Evgenii Balaban (198-96) added 14 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Khimik-2. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Avangard have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They moved-up to second place. Khimik-2 at the other side, also newcomer in the league, dropped to the fourth position with one game lost. They share it with Kirovograd and Avantazh-Pol.. Avangard will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Khimik-2 will play at home against Dnepr (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
