Regular Season Round 12: Opladen - Koeln 63-45

There was no surprise in Leverkusen where 12th ranked Koeln (1-11) was defeated by second ranked SG BBZ Opladen (8-4) 63-45. It looked good early as Koeln took an 2-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then SG BBZ Opladen had a 23-5 second period charge getting the lead and Koeln was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 45-63. SG BBZ Opladen dominated on the defensive end, holding Koeln to just 5 points in second quarter. They outrebounded Koeln 37-25 including 22 on the defensive glass. The winners were led by center Mareike Nettersheim (186) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 10 points and 14 rebounds and center Marie Gulich (194-94) supported her with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks. Even 8 points and 5 rebounds by point guard Paulina Koerner (175-96) did not help to save the game for Koeln. The former international forward Annika Danckert (182-81) added 6 points. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. SG BBZ Opladen maintains second position in North with 8-4 record having just two points less than leader BG 89 Avides. Koeln lost fifth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the twelfth place with 11 games lost. SG BBZ Opladen's next round opponent will be Wolfpack Wolfenbuettel (#6) on the road. Koeln will play against Krofdorf/Gleib. (#8) and hope to win that game.
