Regular Season Round 17: Bayer Giants - Magdeburg 101-81

Date: January 12, 2014
We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams in Leverkusen where 13th ranked Magdeburg (5-12) was rolled over by fourteenth ranked Bayer Giants (5-12) 101-81 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by Bayer Giants. Magdeburg was better in fourth quarter 25-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Magdeburg 42-31 including a 31-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. Bayer Giants shot the lights out from three sinking 15 long-distance shots on high 51.7 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The best player for the winners was American guard Marc Sonnen (190-90, college: N.Iowa) who scored 27 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Goetz Twiehoff (198-85) chipped in 20 points and 9 rebounds (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field). Naturalized American forward Jeramie Woods (195-91) produced 13 points and 6 rebounds and American center Edward Seward (206-78, college: Norfolk St.) added 12 points and 6 rebounds respectively for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Bayer Giants have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to thirteenth place, which they share with defeated Magdeburg. Bayer Giants will face higher ranked Finke Baskets (#12) in Paderborn in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
