Regular Season Round 18: Avangard - Kirovograd 94-96

The most exciting game of round 18 in the Higher League took place in Kyiv. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of 5th ranked Avangard (9-4) to second ranked Kirovograd (11-1) 96-94 on Sunday evening. The guests trailed by 3 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 4-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 96-94. Kirovograd made 29-of-37 free shots (78.4 percent) during the game, while Avangard only scored twelve points from the stripe. Kirovograd forced 27 Avangard turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. 29 personal fouls committed by Avangard helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Guard Stanislav Ovdeyenko (191-84) contributed with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. The former international forward Oleg Saltovets (202-77) replied with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 14 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) and swingman Mykhailo Nasennik (200-83) added 19 points and 7 assists in the effort for Avangard. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Avangard's coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Kirovograd have an impressive eight-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 11-1 record having just three points less than leader SoyuzBasket. Newly promoted Avangard keeps the fifth place with four games lost. Kirovograd are looking forward to face Khimik-2 (#6) in Yuzhny in the next round. Avangard will play at home against BK Donetsk-2 and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
