Regular Season Round 19: Izmir BSB - Cankaya 51-80

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Izmir. Leader Cankaya faced 3rd placed Izmir BSB. Guests from Ankara (15-0) smashed host Izmir BSB (10-5) 80-51. The game was mostly controlled by Cankaya. Izmir BSB was better in second period 19-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Cankaya dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Izmir BSB's 30. They outrebounded Izmir BSB 50-31 including a 37-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. 27 personal fouls committed by Izmir BSB helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was an exceptional evening for center Gulcin Cantekin (187-84) who led the winners and scored 30 points and 9 rebounds. American power forward Sharon Houston (191-88, college: Indiana NW) accounted for 11 points and 10 rebounds for the winning side. Hande Celebi (-90) came up with 16 points and 8 rebounds and Muruvvet Menderes (-79) added 4 points and 7 rebounds respectively for Izmir BSB in the defeat. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the fifteenth consecutive win for Cankaya. They maintain first place in Group A with 15-0 record. Izmir BSB at the other side keeps the third position with five games lost. Cankaya's next round opponent will be Anadolu Univ. (#6) in Eskisehir which should be theoretically another easy game. Izmir BSB will play on the road against Harran Univ. in Sanliurfa and hope to win that game.
