Regular Season Round 19: CAB Madeira - Benfica 84-91

LPB top team - Benfica (18-1) added another victory to their record. This time they beat fifth ranked CAB Madeira (9-8) in Funchal 91-84. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 27-11. But CAB Madeira won second period 23-21. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Benfica shot 61.7 percent from the field. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. It was a great evening for American center David Weaver (209-87, college: Wake Forest) who led his team to a victory scoring 29 points and 5 rebounds (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field). His fellow American import guard Jobey Thomas (194-80, college: Charlotte) helped adding 20 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Benfica's coach Carlos Lisboa allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. At the losing side American point guard Ricky Franklin (185-87, college: Wisc.-Milwaukee) responded with 24 points and 7 assists and the former international swingman Fabio Lima (197-88) scored 18 points and 9 rebounds. Four CAB Madeira players scored in double figures. Benfica have an impressive series of sixteen victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 18-1 record. CAB Madeira at the other side keeps the fifth position with eight games lost. Benfica will play against bottom-ranked Academica (#12) in Coimbra in the next round which should be an easy win for them. CAB Madeira will play on the road against Alges (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
