No shocking result in a game when sixth ranked Science City Jena (5-2) defeated at home 11th ranked SC Rasta Vechta (3-4) 99-88 on Friday. Science City Jena made 23-of-27 free shots (85.2 percent) during the game. They also forced 20 SC Rasta Vechta turnovers. Science City Jena looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. SC Rasta Vechta was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Lithuanian power forward Mantas Virbalas (202-88) fired 13 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. American center Kendall Chones (201-84, college: Colgate) chipped in 15 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Center Oliver Mackeldanz (212-90) produced 22 points and 6 rebounds and American forward Vincent Bailey (201-91, college: Lincoln Memorial) added 16 points and 7 rebounds respectively for lost side. Five Science City Jena and four SC Rasta Vechta players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Science City Jena. They moved-up to second place, which they share with ETB Wohnbau and Hamburg. Loser SC Rasta Vechta keeps the eleventh position with four games lost. Science City Jena will face Nuernberg (#7) in Nurnberg in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. SC Rasta Vechta will play at home against Kirchheim Knights (#5) and hope to win that game and get promotion back to the BBL just one year after relegation.
