Regular Season Round 9: Speyer - Schwelm 99-86

Very important is a road loss of third ranked SG Schwelmer Baskets (6-3) against twelfth ranked Speyer (2-7) on Saturday night. Visiting SG Schwelmer Baskets were defeated by Speyer in Speyer 99-86. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of SG Schwelmer Baskets. Speyer looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American Marcus Smallwood (200-82, college: N.Illinois, agency: R.H.Consultancy) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 16 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and his fellow American import forward Marcus Ware (203-91, college: Niagara) chipped in 17 points and 8 rebounds. Smallwood attended previously one of camps at Eurobasket Summer League on his way to pro basketball. Five Speyer players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was Canadian swingman Chris Johnson (196-88, college: St.Bonaventure) with 28 points and guard Max Kramer (192-89) scored 14 points and 4 assists. SG Schwelmer Baskets' coach let to play ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Speyer moved-up to eleventh place in Group South, which they share with Saarlouis. Loser SG Schwelmer Baskets dropped to the second position with three games lost. Speyer will face league's second-placed Wuerzburg on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. SG Schwelmer Baskets will play against Fraport Skyliners II where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.
