Everything went according to plan when seventh ranked MLP Academics Heidelberg (11-6) defeated at home 14th ranked Bayer Giants (5-12) 89-74 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by MLP Academics Heidelberg. Bayer Giants managed to win third quarter 21-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Bayer Giants 48-21 including a 48-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when MLP Academics Heidelberg made 7 blocks. American guard Bradley Tinsley (191-89, college: Vanderbilt) nailed 23 points and 4 assists for the winning side and his fellow American import forward Kelvin Martin (195-89, college: Charleston So.) accounted for 14 points and 9 rebounds. MLP Academics Heidelberg's coach Branislav Ignjatovic used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Goetz Twiehoff (198-85) came up with 22 points and Canadian point guard Willy Manigat (180-87) added 13 points, 7 assists and 5 steals respectively for Bayer Giants in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for MLP Academics Heidelberg. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with ETB Wohnbau and Nuernberg. Loser Bayer Giants keep the fourteenth position with 12 games lost. MLP Academics Heidelberg will meet Hamburg (#7) on the road in the next round. Bayer Giants will play against Finke Baskets (#12) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
