Regular Season Round 12: Academia - Vasco 78-71

Very expected game in Lisboa where 7th ranked Vasco (4-7) was defeated by third ranked Academia (7-4) 78-71. The hosts were already 14 points ahead at halftime and as many as 21 after three quarters before a 31-17 last quarter charge of Vasco cut the lead to 78-71 at the end of the game. Academia dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Vasco's 32. They outrebounded Vasco 38-20 including a 14-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. The winners were led by Guilherme Correia who had that evening a double-double by scoring 24 points and 11 rebounds and Carlos Tavares supported him with 14 points and 5 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Even 17 points (went 9 for 9 at the free throw line !!!) by guard Joao Veludo (177-92) did not help to save the game for Vasco. Pedro Cruz added 14 points. Five Vasco players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Academia maintains third position with 7-4 record having four points less than leader FC Porto. Vasco lost third consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the seventh place with seven games lost. They share the position with Esgueira. Academia will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Vasco will play at home against Benfica B (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
