Regular Season Round 20: Heidelberg - Mainz 78-74

Rather expected game when 5th ranked ASC Theresianum Mainz (11-9) was defeated on the road by third ranked BasCats Heidelberg (15-5) 78-74 on Saturday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 17-14. But ASC Theresianum Mainz won second period 24-23. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when BasCats Heidelberg won last quarter 23-21. They dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to ASC Theresianum Mainz's 42. Worth to mention a great performance of American point guard Serena Benavente (167-85, college: St.Mary's, CA) who helped to win the game recording 13 points, 6 assists and 4 steals and center Berit Adrion (183-88) who added 13 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. Czech center Gabriela Jandova (190-73) responded with 20 points and 7 rebounds and guard Maria Neufurth (173-88) scored 13 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Four BasCats Heidelberg and five ASC Theresianum Mainz players scored in double figures. BasCats Heidelberg have an impressive five-game winning streak. They maintain third position in South with 15-5 record behind leader Veilchen. ASC Theresianum Mainz lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the fifth place with nine games lost. BasCats Heidelberg will face league's second-placed Don Bosco Bamberg on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. ASC Theresianum Mainz will play against Rhein MB II and hope to win that game.
