Regular Season Round 21: CAB Madeira - Maia Basket 110-93

There was no surprise in Funchal where 9th ranked Maia Basket (8-13) was defeated by sixth ranked CAB Madeira (11-10) 110-93 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by CAB Madeira. Maia Basket managed to win second period 26-25. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Maia Basket 33-21 including 23 on the defensive glass. CAB Madeira shot the lights out from three sinking 22 long-distance shots on high 53.7 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American power forward Tommie Eddie (201-82, college: Mississippi) stepped up and scored 33 points (!!!), 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and his fellow American import swingman Jovonni Shuler (195-87, college: Savannah St.) chipped in 18 points and 13 rebounds. Shuler is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four CAB Madeira players scored in double figures. CAB Madeira's coach Joao Paulo Silva used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was the former international forward Nuno Marcal (205-75) with 28 points and 5 rebounds and guard Pedro Catarino (184-90) scored 26 points and 4 assists. CAB Madeira moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Ovarense and Lusitania. Loser Maia Basket keeps the ninth position with 13 games lost. CAB Madeira will meet higher ranked Barcelos (#3) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Maia Basket will play against the league's second-placed Vitoria SC (#2) and hope to secure a win.
