Sporting (0-1) recorded a loss in Funchal on Saturday night. Visitors were rolled over by CAB Madeira (1-0) 88-63. The hosts trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 1-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 88-63. CAB Madeira dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Sporting's 28. CAB Madeira forced 19 Sporting turnovers. Nigerian-British swingman Ejay Ofomata (180-86, college: Central State) stepped up and scored 21 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and power forward Carolina Escorcio (178-90) chipped in 20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Four CAB Madeira players scored in double figures. At the losing side Senegalese center Bineta Ndoye (196-93, agency: Josep and Nicolas) responded with 8 points and 13 rebounds and guard Catarina Caldeira (166-89) scored 13 points and 5 rebounds. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. CAB Madeira will meet at home GDESSA in the next round. Sporting will play against Lousada and hope to win that game.
