The game had a very big importance for fifth-ranked Craiova as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Craiova smashed 8th ranked Gaz Metan at home 103-83. The game was mostly controlled by Craiova. Gaz Metan managed to win fourth quarter 26-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Gaz Metan 38-24 including 25 on the defensive glass. Craiova looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. 25 personal fouls committed by Gaz Metan helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was the former international forward Bogdan Popescu (202-78, college: Alaska-Fairb.) who scored 17 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. American guard Nicholas Covington (188-85, college: Oklahoma City) chipped in 23 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Covington is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Belarusian-Russian Aliaksandr Pustahvar (202-85) produced 19 points and Lithuanian Vaidotas Peciukas (199-82, college: Hawaii) added 15 points respectively for the guests. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. As mentioned above they are alone now at the top position. Gaz Metan at the other side dropped to the eleventh place with four games lost. Gaz Metan will play next round against Phoenix Galati trying to get back on the winning streak. Craiova will try to continue on its current victory against sixth ranked CS Dinamo Bucuresti on the road.
