Not a big story in a game in Botevgrad where 8th ranked Academik Plovdiv (2-7) was rolled over by second ranked Balkan (7-2) 90-57. The game was mostly controlled by Balkan. Academik Plovdiv was better in fourth quarter 19-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Balkan dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Academik Plovdiv's 32 and made 17-of-21 charity shots (81.0 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Academik Plovdiv 41-30 including 32 on the defensive glass. Forward Stoyan Petkov (198-85) nailed a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds for the winning side and the former international center Nikolay Varbanov (209-85, agency: Interperformances) accounted for 17 points and 6 rebounds. Five Balkan players scored in double figures. Serbian power forward Bosko Jovovic (205-83) came up with 22 points and 9 rebounds and Vasil Bachev (195-92, college: Cuesta JC) added 13 points respectively for Academik Plovdiv in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Balkan. They maintain second place with 7-2 record having just two points less than leader Lukoil Acad. Newly promoted Academik Plovdiv keeps the eighth position with seven games lost. Balkan will play against Beroe (#3) in Stara Zagora in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Academik Plovdiv will play on the road against Yambol (#10) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
