Regular Season Round 14: Benfica - Sporting 76-67

No shocking result in a game when fourth ranked Benfica (9-5) beat 9th ranked Sporting (5-9) in Lisboa 76-67 on Sunday. Sporting trailed by 14 points at halftime and as many as 15 after three quarters before a 24-18 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 67-76 at the end of the game. Benfica outrebounded Sporting 41-30 including 18 on the offensive glass. American forward Callan Taylor (182-90, college: Sacred Heart) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 20 rebounds. The other American import guard Janeicia Neely (165-93, college: Loyola, LA) contributed with 16 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Four Benfica players scored in double figures. Benfica's coach Andre Cardoso allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Senegalese center Bineta Ndoye (196-93, agency: Josep and Nicolas) replied with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 17 rebounds and Spanish Arantxa Mallou (181-91) added 18 points in the effort for Sporting. Benfica have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 9-5 record. Newly promoted Sporting keeps the ninth place with nine games lost. Benfica will face league's second-placed GDESSA in Barreiro in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Sporting will play on the road against Lombos Quinta (#5) in Carcavelos and hope to win that game.
