Very predictable result in Bucuresti where sixth ranked Steaua CSM (11-7) defeated bottom-ranked Gaz Metan (2-16) 85-80 on Wednesday. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 25-16. But Gaz Metan won second period 23-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Steaua CSM looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The former international Titus Nicoara (203-88, agency: Interperformances) fired 16 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Croatian guard Pankracije Barac (196-81, agency: Court Side) chipped in 17 points. Steaua CSM's coach Vasile Claudiu Fometescu used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. The former international center Ionut Dragusin (221-85) produced 22 points and 7 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) and point guard Niksa Nikolic (195-91, agency: Beo Basket) added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 12 assists respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Steaua CSM maintains sixth place with 11-7 record. Gaz Metan lost fourth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with 16 games lost. Steaua CSM will meet Pitesti (#9) on the road in the next round. Gaz Metan will play against CSU Sibiu and hope to secure a win.
