Second Stage Round 8: Mazeikiai - Zalgiris II 82-79

Fifth-ranked Zalgiris II (17-16) made lots of trouble for third ranked Mazeikiai (24-9) on Saturday. Mazeikiai managed to secure only three-point victory 82-79. However their fans expected easier game. The hosts trailed by 8 points after first quarter, but they rallied back winning two of next three quarters and won the game by 3 points. Mazeikiai made 18-of-20 free shots (90.0 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was guard Sarunas Vingelis (192-89) who scored 24 points. Swingman Vytautas Pikalavicius (197-90) chipped in 11 points and 7 rebounds. Power forward Regimantas Miniotas (206-96) produced 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and swingman Martynas Varnas (196-97) added 10 points and 4 assists respectively for the guests. Four Mazeikiai and five Zalgiris II players scored in double figures. Zalgiris II's coach Tomas Masiulis rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Mazeikiai maintains third position with 24-9 record having just eight point less than leader Suduva-Mantinga. Zalgiris II at the other side keeps the fifth place with 16 games lost. They share the position with Palanga. Mazeikiai will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Zalgiris II will play at home against the league's second-placed Vytis (#2) and is hoping to prove to their fans that this time they can win.
