Regular Season Round 33: Utena - H-Sirenos 88-60

Date: March 8, 2016
Very significant was Utena's (#2, 20-2) victory against 4th placed Hoptrans-Sirenos Kaunas (11-11) 88-60. The game was mostly controlled by Utena. Hoptrans-Sirenos Kaunas was better in fourth quarter 25-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Utena dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Hoptrans-Sirenos Kaunas' 30. Utena had a 34-21 advantage in offensive rebounds. They brought some defensive toughness making 8 blocks. International swingman Marina Solopova (180-90) nailed 25 points for the winning side and forward Ieva Simkute (191-89) accounted for 9 points and 13 rebounds. The former international point guard Santa Okockyte (175-92) came up with 18 points and 4 steals and Kornelija Balciunaite (177-81) added 7 points and 8 rebounds respectively for Hoptrans-Sirenos Kaunas in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the ninth consecutive win for Utena. Defending champion (20-2) keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Suduva. Hoptrans-Sirenos Kaunas at the other side keeps the fourth place with 11 games lost. Utena will play against Siauliai-Univ. (#6) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Hoptrans-Sirenos Kaunas will play against the league's leader Suduva and hopes to get back on the winning track.
