Second Stage Round 13: Mazeikiai - Perlas-MRU 67-65

Fourth-ranked Perlas-MRU (19-18) gave a tough game to third ranked Mazeikiai (27-10) on Friday. Mazeikiai managed to secure only two-point victory 67-65. However their fans expected easier game. The hosts trailed by 9 points at the halftime before their 22-8 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Mazeikiai shot 26 for 36 from the free-throw line, while Perlas-MRU only scored eight points from the stripe. 29 personal fouls committed by Perlas-MRU helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Forward Arvydas Gydra (206-89) stepped up and scored 17 points and 6 rebounds for the winners and guard Evaldas Saulys (195-93) chipped in 10 points and 6 rebounds. At the losing side guard Margiris Normantas (194-96) responded with 23 points and forward Remigijus Sugintas (200-87) scored 10 points and 7 rebounds. Perlas-MRU's coach Arvydas Gronskis tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Mazeikiai maintains third place with 27-10 record having just ten point less than leader Suduva-Mantinga. Perlas-MRU lost third consecutive game. They keep the fourth position with 18 games lost. They share it with Zalgiris II and Palanga. Mazeikiai are looking forward to face Palanga (#6) on the road in the next round. Perlas-MRU will play against the league's second-placed Vytis and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
