There was an upset when higher ranked Barreirense (7-6) lost to fourteenth ranked Sampaense (6-6) in Coimbra 55-62 on Friday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Barreirense won third quarter 18-12. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Sampaense won last quarter 16-10. They also forced 21 Barreirense turnovers. Barreirense was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. Forward Diogo Goncalves (200-87) orchestrated the victory by scoring 17 points and 6 rebounds. Naturalized American guard Timothy Lucas (191-87, college: William Pater.) contributed with 13 points and 4 assists for the winners. Lucas is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Cape Verdean forward Kevin Coronel (197-91) replied with 11 points and 9 rebounds and guard Alexandre Coelho (178-90) added 10 points and 4 assists in the effort for Barreirense. Sampaense moved-up to thirteenth place in Places 9-16. Newly promoted Barreirense dropped to the eleventh position with six games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
