Regular Season Round 5: Wasserburg II - Heidelberg 69-78

Everything went according to plan when leader BasCats Heidelberg (5-0) won against on the road 8th ranked Wasserburg II (1-3) 78-69 on Saturday. Wasserburg II trailed by 11 points after 3 quarters before a 17-15 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 69-78 at the end of the game. BasCats Heidelberg forced 20 Wasserburg II turnovers and outrebounded them 39-27 including 24 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was American point guard Serena Benavente (167-85, college: St.Mary's, CA) who scored 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Her fellow American import center Erica Carlson (193-88, college: Dixie St.) chipped in 9 points and 11 rebounds. Four BasCats Heidelberg players scored in double figures. BasCats Heidelberg's coach Dennis Czygan allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Canadian guard Brittany Moore (168-89) produced 27 points and American forward Liz Wood (178-93, college: Maine) added 14 points and 10 rebounds respectively for the hosts. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for BasCats Heidelberg. They maintain first place in South with 5-0 record. Loser Wasserburg II dropped to the ninth position with three games lost. BasCats Heidelberg will face Homburger TG (#5) at home in the next round. Wasserburg II will play against Rhein Main Baskets (#6) in Langen and hope to win that game.
