Regular Season Round 7: GDESSA - Academico FC 69-44
Date: November 27, 2016
The game had a very big importance for second-ranked GDESSA as it allowed them to take a leadership position after previous leader's (Uniao Sportiva) loss. GDESSA smashed 10th ranked Academico FC in Barreiro 69-44. The game without a history. GDESSA led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Academico FC to just 7 points in second and third quarters. They outrebounded Academico FC 41-19 including a 19-2 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a great evening for American forward Layne Murphy (188, college: Chicago St.) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 18 rebounds. Eliana Cabral (177-99) helped adding 8 points. At the losing side Isabel Costa (180-97) responded with 3 points and 9 rebounds and point guard Susana Lopes (168-96) scored 10 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with 3 other teams. Newly promoted Academico FC keeps the tenth place with six games lost. They share the position with CD Torres N. and Ovarense. Academico FC will play next round against strong Benfica trying to get back on the winning streak. GDESSA will try to continue on its current victory against ninth ranked Lousada at home.
