Regular Season Round 19: Zalgiris II - Petrochema 93-74

Very predictable result when sixth ranked Zalgiris II (12-10) rolled over 13th ranked Petrochema (5-14) in Kaunas 93-74 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Zalgiris II. Petrochema was better in third quarter 24-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Petrochema 41-26 including a 30-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. Zalgiris II looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Zalgiris II made 9 blocks. It was a very good performance for power forward Laurynas Birutis (213-97) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 25 points, 13 rebounds and 8 blocks. Gytis Masiulis (206-98) contributed with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Zalgiris II's coach Tomas Masiulis used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. Forward Karolis Sarukas (198-95) answered with 19 points and 6 rebounds and point guard Justas Vazalis (197-96) added 11 points and 5 assists in the effort for Petrochema. Five Zalgiris II and four Petrochema players scored in double figures. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Zalgiris II. They moved-up to fifth place. Loser Petrochema keeps the thirteenth position with 14 games lost. Zalgiris II will face higher ranked Rasai (#3) in Raseiniai in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Petrochema will play at home against the league's leader Suduva-Mantinga (#1) and hope to win that game.
