Very expected game when 8th ranked Herford (7-9) was defeated at home by first ranked SG Schwelmer Baskets (14-3) 84-68 on Saturday. SG Schwelmer Baskets dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Herford's 36. They outrebounded Herford 40-22 including a 31-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. American swingman Harry Boyce (193-85, college: Minn.St.-Mankato) stepped up and scored 12 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners and Lithuanian swingman Andrius Mikutis (194-88, college: John Brown) chipped in 17 points and 6 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Four SG Schwelmer Baskets players scored in double figures. SG Schwelmer Baskets' coach Falk Moeller allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Spanish power forward Guillermo De La Puente (198-91) responded with 21 points and 8 rebounds and Slovenian forward Mark Berlic (198-94) scored 11 points. The victory was the ninth consecutive win for SG Schwelmer Baskets. They maintain first place in West with 14-3 record. Loser Herford dropped to the ninth position with nine games lost. SG Schwelmer Baskets will face Dorsten (#5) at home in the next round. Herford will play against Salzkotten (#6) and hope to win that game.
