There was no surprise when 10th ranked ASC Theresianum Mainz (2-12) lost at home to fifth ranked Speyer / Schifferstadt (7-6) 70-54 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 4 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 3-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 70-54. Speyer / Schifferstadt dominated on the defensive end, holding ASC Theresianum Mainz to just 7 points in fourth quarter. It was a good game for forward Uta Gelbke (177-86) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 20 rebounds. Forward Martina Kraus (186-90) contributed with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Naturalized Bulgarian guard Gergana Georgieva (181-87) answered with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 17 rebounds and 9 assists and guard Astrid Baumgartner (175-95) added 14 points in the effort for ASC Theresianum Mainz. Speyer / Schifferstadt maintains fifth place in South with 7-6 record, which they share with Rhein MB. ASC Theresianum Mainz lost fifth consecutive game. They dropped to the eleventh position with 12 games lost. Speyer / Schifferstadt will face higher ranked Homburger TG (#4) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. ASC Theresianum Mainz will play against Weiterstadt (#7) and hope to win that game.
