Regular Season Round 21: Mersin Gelisim - Izmit 65-71

No shocking result in a game when fourth ranked Izmit (16-5) beat on the road 9th ranked Mersin Gelisim (13-8) 71-65 on Sunday. Izmit dominated down low during the game scoring 38 of its points in the paint compared to Mersin Gelisim's 18 and made 21-of-26 free shots (80.8 percent) during the game. Mersin Gelisim was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for American center Whitney Jones (183-87, college: Arkansas, agency: LBM Management) who led her team to a victory with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. American-Polish forward Julia Demirer (187-81, college: Emmanuel, MA) contributed with 18 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Izmit's coach used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Ilknur Yildizhan (186-96) answered with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists and the former international Fahriye Bayraktar (185-95) added 14 points in the effort for Mersin Gelisim. The victory was the third consecutive win for Izmit. Newly promoted Izmit maintains fourth place with 16-5 record. Loser Mersin Gelisim keeps the ninth position with eight games lost. Izmit will face Orduspor (#10) at home in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Mersin Gelisim will play against the league's leader Bornova and hope to win that game.
