Regular Season Round 16: Speyer - Bad Hombur 40-71
Date: February 5, 2017
The game in Dudenhofen supposed to be also quite interesting. Fourth ranked Homburger TG (10-4) played at the court of 6th ranked Speyer / Schifferstadt (7-8). Homburger TG smashed Speyer / Schifferstadt 71-40 on Sunday. The game without a history. Homburger TG led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Speyer / Schifferstadt to just 7 points in fourth quarter. Homburger TG held Speyer / Schifferstadt to an opponent 21.5 percent shooting from the field compared to 42.4 percent accuracy of the winners. Homburger TG forced 23 Speyer / Schifferstadt turnovers and outrebounded them 42-28 including a 34-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Celia Marfone (183-94, college: Cal-Davis) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 19 points and 15 rebounds and the other American import point guard Elena Popkey (168-94, college: Oakland) who added 25 points and 9 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side forward Uta Gelbke (177-86) responded with 9 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks and Luxembourg forward Michele Weynandt (178-86, college: Miami, OH) scored 11 points. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Homburger TG have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place in South, which they share with Wuerzburg and Bamberg. Loser Speyer / Schifferstadt dropped to the seventh position with eight games lost. Homburger TG will face league's leader BasCats Heidelberg at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Speyer / Schifferstadt will play against the league's second-placed Don Bosco Bamberg (#2) and hope to win that game.
