Regular Season Round 18: Khimik-2 - Hoverla 89-80

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Yuzhny. Second ranked Khimik-2 faced top-ranked Hoverla. Host Khimik-2 (17-5) defeated guests from Frankivsk (18-4) 89-80. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. The hosts trailed by 5 points at the halftime before their 44-30 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Khimik-2 forced 21 Hoverla turnovers. Strangely Hoverla outrebounded Khimik-2 50-28 including a 23-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was point guard Kyrylo Meshheryakov (184-95) who scored 25 points and 5 assists. Forward Artem Kovalov (202-97, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov) chipped in 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 blocks. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international center Roman Gumeniuk (220-87) who recorded a double-double by scoring 12 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists and guard Andriy Kalashnikov (175-89) added 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists respectively. Four Khimik-2 and five Hoverla players scored in double figures. Khimik-2 have an impressive eight-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 17-5 record behind leader Zolotoi Vek. Loser Hoverla still keeps top place with four games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
