2. Bundesliga top team - BasCats Heidelberg (17-1) managed to deliver another win. This time they beat sixth ranked Speyer / Schifferstadt (7-10) in Dudenhofen 83-69. It looked good early as Speyer / Schifferstadt took a 10-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then BasCats Heidelberg took control and eventually winning the game that evening by 14 points. They dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Speyer / Schifferstadt's 26. BasCats Heidelberg forced 20 Speyer / Schifferstadt turnovers and outrebounded them 35-17 including a 24-13 advantage in defensive rebounds. 24 personal fouls committed by Speyer / Schifferstadt helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of American point guard Serena Benavente (167-85, college: St.Mary's, CA) who helped to win the game recording 15 points and 5 assists. Center Viktoria Krell (183-85, college: Lindsey Wilson) contributed with 13 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. American guard Jennifer Mocanu (172-90) answered with 13 points and 5 rebounds and forward Uta Gelbke (177-86) added 13 points in the effort for Speyer / Schifferstadt. Five Speyer / Schifferstadt players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for BasCats Heidelberg. They maintain first place in South with 17-1 record. Speyer / Schifferstadt lost their fourth game in a row.
