Regular Season Round 27: Izmit - Mersin Kurtulus 71-75

We should mention about the upset which took place in Izmit, where higher ranked Izmit (19-8) lost at home to seventeenth ranked Mersin Kurtulus (7-20) 71-75 on Saturday. Mersin Kurtulus made 16-of-20 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a great evening for American forward Corinne Costa (193, college: UCLA) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 36 points (!!!), 14 rebounds and 5 blocks (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). Center Deniz Ekiz (189-89) helped adding 13 points and 8 assists. The best for the losing side was the former international point guard Busra Akbas (174-95) with 25 points and 5 rebounds and American center Whitney Jones (183-87, college: Arkansas, agency: LBM Management) produced a double-double by scoring 16 points and 14 rebounds. Mersin Kurtulus maintains seventeenth place with 7-20 record. Newly promoted Izmit dropped to the sixth position with eight games lost. They share it with Mersin Univ.. Mersin Kurtulus will meet at home league's leader Bornova in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Izmit will play against Elazig (#8) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
