Second Stage Round 8: Maia Basket - Sampaense 81-91

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 11th ranked Maia Basket (5-26) was defeated at home by twelfth ranked Sampaense (5-25) 91-81 on Friday. Sampaense dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Maia Basket's 26. They outrebounded Maia Basket 41-28 including a 30-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was American guard Devin Martin (193, college: Md-E Shore) who scored 19 points and 9 rebounds. The other American import point guard Andrew Guillory (190-92, college: Arkansas Tech) chipped in 16 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Four Sampaense players scored in double figures. Point guard Pedro Catarino (184-90) produced 35 points (!!!) (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) and the former international forward Nuno Marcal (205-75) added 16 points and 14 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Sampaense moved-up to eleventh place in Places 7-12. Maia Basket lost fifth consecutive game. Loser Maia Basket dropped to the bottom. Sampaense will meet higher ranked Ovarense (#8) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Maia Basket will play against Lusitania (#10) in Angra and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
