Regular Season Round 1: Freiburg - Speyer 79-48

Date: September 30, 2017
Eisvogel Freiburg used a home court advantage and rolled over the opponent from Dudenhofen 79-48 on Saturday night. The game was mostly controlled by Eisvogel Freiburg. Speyer / Schifferstadt was better in third quarter 17-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Eisvogel Freiburg forced 20 Speyer / Schifferstadt turnovers and outrebounded them 46-32 including 16 on the offensive glass. Eisvogel Freiburg looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists comparing to just 5 passes made by Speyer / Schifferstadt's players. American guard Kelly Hughes (180, college: Boston Coll.) fired 25 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) for the winners. Forward Kirsten Gaffney (185) chipped in a double-double by scoring 14 points and 11 rebounds. Canadian forward Kathryn Verboom (179-86) produced a double-double by scoring 10 points and 10 rebounds and American guard Jennifer Mocanu (172-90) added 13 points and 6 rebounds respectively for lost side. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Eisvogel Freiburg will face Keltern II (#9) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Speyer / Schifferstadt will play against Homburger TG and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
