Regular Season Round 5: Zalgiris - Vytautas 97-54

Bottom-ranked Vytautas (0-7) is still winless. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. This time they lost on the road their seventh consecutive match to second ranked Zalgiris (7-1) 97-54. Zalgiris dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Vytautas' 28 and made 20-of-26 charity shots (76.9 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Vytautas 38-18 including a 26-14 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Zalgiris especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.9 percentage. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 27 assists. The former international Paulius Jankunas (205-84) orchestrated the victory by scoring 13 points and 7 rebounds (perfect from the field making all six shots). The former international center Antanas Kavaliauskas (208-84, college: Texas A&M, agency: Interperformances) contributed with 16 points for the winners. Ukrainian point guard Denys Lukashov (190-89, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov) answered with 12 points and international forward Eigirdas Zukauskas (205-92) added 7 points and 4 assists in the effort for Vytautas. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Zalgiris. Defending champion maintains second place with 7-1 record behind leader Lietkabelis. Vytautas lost their seventh game in a row. They still close the standings with seven games lost. Zalgiris' next round opponent will be league's leader Lietkabelis in Panevezys and it will be for sure the game of the week. Vytautas will play at home against Juventus (#10) and looks forward to get finally their first victory.
