Date: November 25, 2017
Everything went according to plan when second ranked Speyer (9-1) outplayed at home 6th ranked Kaiserslautern (6-5) 79-59 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Speyer. Kaiserslautern was better in fourth quarter 21-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Speyer looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Speyer made 9 blocks. American guard Jordan Rezendes (188, college: Mass.-Dartmouth) orchestrated the victory by scoring 20 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Dominican-Spanish power forward Michel Acosta (201-92) contributed with a double-double by scoring 12 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Four Speyer players scored in double figures. American forward John Barber (200-85, college: Youngstown St.) answered with 13 points and 8 rebounds and guard Ronny Weihmann (186-82, college: Emmanuel, GA) added 9 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in the effort for Kaiserslautern. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the seventh consecutive win for Speyer. They maintain second place in South-West with 9-1 record having 2 victories less than leader Muenster. Loser Kaiserslautern dropped to the seventh position with five games lost. Speyer will face Tuebingen II (#3) at home in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Kaiserslautern will play against Koblenz (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
