Regular Season Round 8: Vitoria SC - Alges 56-59

There was a minor upset in Guimaraes where 7th ranked Vitoria SC (3-5) was edged by tenth ranked Alges (4-5) 59-56 on Sunday. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 16-10. But Vitoria SC won second period 17-12. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Alges won last quarter 13-12. The best player for the winners was Angolan forward Artemis Afonso (175-93) who had a double-double by scoring 17 points and 18 rebounds. Guard Marcia Carvalho (170-92) chipped in 20 points and 7 rebounds. American forward Trudy Armstead (185-91, college: Northwestern St.) produced a double-double by scoring 18 points and 13 rebounds and guard Barbara Miranda (165-97) added 23 points respectively for the hosts. Alges moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Benfica. Vitoria SC lost third consecutive game. Vitoria SC at the other side, also newcomer in the league, dropped to the eighth position with five games lost. Alges will face Benfica (#7) in Lisbona in the next round. Vitoria SC will play on the road against Olivais in Coimbra and hope to win that game.
