Regular Season Round 17: Phoenix Galati - Steaua CSM 93-85

Very important is a road loss of second ranked Steaua CSM (12-5) against eighth ranked Phoenix Galati (8-9) on Saturday night. Visiting Steaua CSM was defeated by Phoenix Galati in a tough game in Galati 85-93. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Steaua CSM. It looked good early as Steaua CSM took a 3-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Phoenix Galati had a 24-18 second period charge getting the lead and Steaua CSM was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 85-93. Phoenix Galati players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists. Steaua CSM was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. American point guard Jarvis Threatt (188-93, college: Delaware, agency: KMG Sports Management) orchestrated the victory with a triple-double by scoring 15 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. His fellow American import power forward Tony Gugino (207-86, college: Hillsdale) contributed with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Five Phoenix Galati players scored in double figures. Phoenix Galati's coach Florin Nini allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Serbian power forward Dragan Zekovic (209-87, agency: BeoBasket) answered with 26 points and 7 rebounds and American point guard Brandon Taylor (178-94, college: Utah) added 16 points and 4 assists in the effort for Steaua CSM. Phoenix Galati maintains eighth place with 8-9 record. Steaua CSM at the other side dropped to the third position with five games lost. They share it with BC Timisoara. Phoenix Galati will play against league's leader CSU Sibiu on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Steaua CSM will play against BC Timisoara and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
