Second Stage Round 5: Akademik Sofia - CSKA 93-51

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of CSKA (4-1) on the court of second ranked Akademik Sofia on Sunday night. Visitors were rolled over by Akademik Sofia 93-51. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in A. Akademik Sofia dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to CSKA's 30. They outrebounded CSKA 42-21 including a 29-14 advantage in defensive rebounds. Akademik Sofia looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by CSKA's players. Center Tsvetomir Chernokozhev (206-0) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 13 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners and Mario Mirchev (201-99) chipped in 9 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists. Four Akademik Sofia players scored in double figures. Akademik Sofia's coach Ivan Kocev felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Power forward Robert Georgiev (187-98) responded with 14 points and 6 assists and swingman Emiliyan Grudov (195-1) scored 14 points. Akademik Sofia maintains second place in A with 3-1 record behind leader CSKA. CSKA at the other side still keeps top position with one game lost. Akademik Sofia are looking forward to face Balkan 2 (#4) in Botevgrad in the next round. CSKA will play on the road against Vidabasket in Vidin and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
