Very expected game when 13th ranked Science City Jena (9-14) was defeated at home by sixth ranked EWE Baskets (14-9) 83-74 on Sunday. EWE Baskets made 21-of-26 free shots (80.8 percent) during the game. It was a great evening for American point guard Mickey McConnell (182-89, college: St.Mary's, CA) who led his team to a victory scoring 19 points and 5 assists. Austrian-Slovenian center Rasid Mahalbasic (210-90, agency: BeoBasket) helped adding 10 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. American forward Derrick Allen (201-80, college: Mississippi) responded with 17 points and 6 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) and the other American import point guard Julius Jenkins (187-81, college: Georgia South) scored 19 points. Both coaches tested many bench players saving starting five for next games. EWE Baskets maintains sixth place with 14-9 record. Loser Science City Jena keeps the thirteenth position with 14 games lost. EWE Baskets will meet bottom-ranked Walter Tigers (#18) in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Science City Jena will play against Telekom Baskets (#5) in Bonn and hope to secure a win.
