Regular Season Round 4: Speyer - HAKRO Merlins II 123-71

The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Speyer as it allowed them to take a leadership position in South-West. Speyer smashed bottom-ranked HAKRO Merlins II at home 123-71. Speyer dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to HAKRO Merlins II's 30. Speyer forced 20 HAKRO Merlins II turnovers and outrebounded them 48-23 including a 18-0 advantage in offensive rebounds. Speyer players were unselfish on offense dishing 33 assists comparing to just 16 passes made by HAKRO Merlins II's players. The winners were led by naturalized Russian forward Albert Kuppe (200-88) who scored that evening 34 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds and British center Kingsley Nwagboso (213-96, college: Francis Marion) supported him with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Five Speyer players scored in double figures. Even 19 points by British guard Liam Carpenter (187-96) did not help to save the game for HAKRO Merlins II. Serbian point guard Aleksa Kovacevic (186-2) added 9 points and 7 assists for lost side. HAKRO Merlins II's coach Kai Buchmann gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Speyer have a solid three-game winning streak. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with Stuttgart. HAKRO Merlins II at the other side still closes the standings with three games lost. They share the position with Kronberg. HAKRO Merlins II will play next round against Giessen Pointers trying to get back on the winning streak. Speyer will try to continue on its current victory against fourteenth ranked Kronberg on the road.
