Regular Season Round 5: Khimik - Zaporizhye 87-95

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Yuzhny. First ranked Zaporizhye faced 4th placed Khimik. Guests from Zaporozhye (6-1) defeated host Khimik (3-3) 95-87. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Khimik. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 32-19. But Khimik won second period 18-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Zaporizhye made 20-of-24 free shots (83.3 percent) during the game. It was a great shooting night for Zaporizhye especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 64.7 percentage. American guard Malique Trent (189-94, college: Hampton) stepped up and scored 30 points, 5 assists and 6 steals (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) for the winners and his fellow American import forward Kyndahl Hill (201-94, college: Weber St.) chipped in 16 points and 7 rebounds. Zaporizhye's coach Valeriy Plehanov used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American forward Christian Jones (201-93, college: UNLV, agency: BeoBasket) responded with 23 points and Sergiy Pavlov (205-97) scored 21 points (was perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line !!!). Four Zaporizhye and five Khimik players scored in double figures. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Zaporizhye. They maintain first place with 6-1 record. Loser Khimik keeps the fourth position with three games lost. They share it with Dnipro. Zaporizhye will meet Mykolaiv (#6) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Khimik will play against the league's second-placed Odessa and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
