There was a surprise result when thirteenth ranked HAKRO Merlins II (1-5) won against higher ranked Mainz (2-4) in Crailsheim 87-71 on Saturday. HAKRO Merlins II looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. It was a very good performance for Serbian point guard Aleksa Kovacevic (187-2) who helped to win the game recording 23 points, 8 assists and 6 steals. Forward Vincent Hoffmann (206-1) contributed with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Five HAKRO Merlins II players scored in double figures. Naturalized American point guard Anish Sharda (188-82, college: St.Mary's, KS) answered with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists and swingman Felix Oppenberg (190-97) added 10 points and 8 rebounds in the effort for Mainz. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. HAKRO Merlins II maintains thirteenth place in South-West with 1-5 record, which they share with Kronberg. Loser Mainz keeps the ninth position with four games lost. HAKRO Merlins II will face higher ranked Fellbach (#12) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
