There was no surprise when 18th ranked Crailsheim Merlins (1-12) were defeated on the road by fifth ranked BBC Bayreuth (8-4) 102-85 on Saturday. BBC Bayreuth dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Crailsheim Merlins' 38. BBC Bayreuth looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. American point guard David Stockton (180-91, college: Gonzaga) stepped up and scored 15 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners and his fellow American import forward DeMon Brooks (202-92, college: Davidson) chipped in 19 points and 5 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). BBC Bayreuth's coach Raoul Korner used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. At the losing side American point guard Frank Turner (178-88, college: Canisius, agency: Inception Sports) responded with 18 points, 5 assists and 4 steals and Australian swingman Ben Madgen (193-85, college: Augusta) scored 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Five BBC Bayreuth and four Crailsheim Merlins players scored in double figures. BBC Bayreuth maintains fifth place with 8-4 record. Crailsheim Merlins lost their ninth game in a row. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom position with 12 games lost. BBC Bayreuth will meet higher ranked Brose Baskets (#4) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Crailsheim Merlins will play against ratiopharm Ulm (#9) and hope to win that game.
