Regular Season Round 15: Khimik - Cherkasy 92-89

Eighth-ranked Cherkasy (3-10) made lots of trouble for first ranked Khimik (14-4) in Yuzhny on Friday. Khimik managed to secure only three-point victory 92-89. However their fans expected much easier game. The hosts trailed by 3 points after three quarters before their 23-17 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Khimik outrebounded Cherkasy 37-22 including a 13-1 advantage in offensive rebounds. 30 personal fouls committed by Cherkasy helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was U.S. Virgin Islands guard Deon Edwin (190-92, college: Kent St., agency: Interperformances) who had a double-double by scoring 23 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals. International Sergiy Pavlov (205-97) chipped in a double-double by scoring 19 points and 12 rebounds. Five Khimik players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international swingman Oleksandr Kolchenko (195-88) who recorded 28 points and 5 rebounds and American guard Brandon Young (193-91, college: DePaul) added 18 points and 9 assists respectively. Cherkasy's coach Maksym Mikhelson tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Khimik have an impressive series of nine victories in a row. They maintain first place with 14-4 record. Defending champion Cherkasy stay at the bottom position with ten games lost. Khimik are looking forward to face Kyiv Basket (#4) at home in the next round. Cherkasy will play against Odessa (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
