Regular Season Round 19: Zalgiris - Nevezis 82-79

Ninth-ranked Nevezis (4-15) gave a tough game to first ranked Zalgiris (17-2) in Kaunas on Sunday. Zalgiris managed to secure only three-point victory 82-79. However their fans expected much easier game. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 24-18. But Nevezis won second period 18-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Zalgiris dominated down low during the game scoring 44 of its points in the paint compared to Nevezis' 24 and made 17-of-20 free shots (85.0 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Nevezis 38-21 including a 27-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Zalgiris looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Nevezis' players. 24 personal fouls committed by Nevezis helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Americans were the main players on the court. It was a great evening for guard Derrick Walton-Jr (185-95, college: Michigan) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 10 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Aaron White (206-92, college: Iowa) helped adding 16 points and 5 rebounds. Four Zalgiris players scored in double figures. At the losing side point guard Chauncey Collins (183-95, college: TCU, agency: Alti Sport) responded with 29 points and point guard Adonte Parker (186-89, college: Dayton) scored 22 points. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Defending champion maintains first place with 17-2 record. Nevezis at the other side keeps the ninth position with 15 games lost. Zalgiris are looking forward to face Juventus (#6) in Utena in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Nevezis will have a break next round.
