Tenth-ranked Pinar Karsiyaka (6-9) gave a tough game to fourth ranked Tofas (10-5) in Bursa on Saturday. Tofas managed to secure only two-point victory 93-91. However their fans expected much easier game. Tofas forced 20 Pinar Karsiyaka turnovers. Strangely Pinar Karsiyaka outrebounded Tofas 41-27 including 29 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. American guard Sammy Mejia (199-83, college: DePaul) fired 20 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners. The other American import guard Diante Garrett (193-88, college: Iowa St.) chipped in 15 points and 8 assists. Egyptian forward Assem Marei (206-92, college: Minn.St.-Mankato) produced a double-double by scoring 25 points and 11 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) and international point guard Berk Ugurlu (191-96) added 12 points and 6 assists respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Tofas moved-up to third place, which they share with Turk Telekom. Loser Pinar Karsiyaka keeps the tenth position with nine games lost. They share it with Banvit BK and Buyukcekmece. Tofas will meet bottom-ranked Istanbul BBSK (#15) on the road in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Pinar Karsiyaka will play against Besiktas (#8) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
