Second Stage Round 12: Braga - Beira Mar 74-67

There was no surprise when 7th ranked Beira Mar (8-18) was defeated on the road by fifth ranked Braga (10-14) 74-67 on Saturday. Beira Mar was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was forward Joao Malheiro (192-99) who scored 16 points and 8 rebounds. Luis Araujo (-94) chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds (went 9 for 9 at the free throw line !!!). At the other side the best for losing team was point guard Goncalo Catarino (173-94) who recorded 17 points and Cape Verdean forward Ailton Lopes-Marques (200-95) added 10 points and 7 rebounds respectively. Four Beira Mar players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Newly promoted Braga maintains fifth position with 10-14 record. Loser Beira Mar keeps the seventh place with 18 games lost. Braga will face higher ranked Benfica B (#3) in Lisbona in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Beira Mar will play on the road against Vasco (#6) in Porto and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
