Regular Season Round 1: Etha - AEK Larnaca 70-111
Date: October 12, 2019
Quite upsetting was Etha's 41-point home defeat in a game versus AEK Larnaca who smashed hosts The game without a history. AEK Larnaca led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They shot 65.2 percent from the field. AEK Larnaca forced 20 Etha turnovers and outrebounded them 36-22 including a 29-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. They shot the lights out from three sinking 16 long-distance shots on high 59.3 percentage. AEK Larnaca looked well-organized offensively handing out 30 assists comparing to just 12 passes made by Etha's players. American point guard Devon Thomas (183-94, college: Texas Tech) fired a double-double by scoring 21 points and 14 assists for the winners. Canadian-Nigerian forward Derek Ogbeide (203-97, college: Georgia) chipped in 18 points and 7 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). American guard Jeremy Smith (190-95, college: Nicholls St.) produced 16 points and the other American import forward Curtis Phillips (196-96, college: Tenn Tech, agency: Haylett Sports) added 14 points respectively for lost side. Five AEK Larnaca and four Etha players scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. AEK Larnaca will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Etha will play against AEL (#6) in Limassol and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
