Regular Season Round 5: Maia Basket - Illiabum 76-72

There was an upset when higher ranked Illiabum (3-2) was defeated on the road by eleventh ranked Maia Basket (2-3) 76-72 on Saturday. Strangely Illiabum outrebounded Maia Basket 37-22 including 22 on the defensive glass. Maia Basket shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 54.5 percentage. American swingman Lamar Morgan (198-97, college: Coppin St.) stepped up and scored 26 points for the winners and his fellow American import guard Fred Sims Jr. (193-97, college: Chicago St.) chipped in 24 points. Sims Jr. is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. Cape Verdean forward Kevin Coronel (197-91) responded with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds and American forward Anthony Livingston (203-92, college: Texas Tech) scored 11 points and 9 rebounds. Four Illiabum players scored in double figures. Maia Basket moved-up to eighth place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Illiabum keeps the fifth position with two games lost. Maia Basket will face bottom-ranked Terceira (#14) in Angra Heroismo in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Illiabum will play at home against the league's second-placed Benfica (#2) and will have a slim chance for a victory.
